临沧茶厂始建于1956年, 由云南省茶叶进出口公司“昆明茶厂”报总公司投资兴建，以适应云南省大力发展茶叶生产，增加红茶产量，支援出口需要。厂址选在临沧县城郊，占地面积50余亩，于1956年10月动工，1957年建成。60年代主要以加工红茶和滇青茶为主，1970年，临沧茶厂下放到县管以后，云县、双江等地也相继建制了茶叶精制厂。同时开展收购青毛茶加工，供应内销。84年茶贸公司成立以后，临沧茶厂供应红茶和滇青茶给茶贸中心销售，直到90年茶贸公司撤销为止。90年代后期临沧茶厂被收购。
